English at Chinese School (TCS)

What:

An English class open to all adults who speak English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL), but it is specifically tailored to the educated Chinese Community in Tallahassee, Florida, who speak English but feel the need to improve.

We will work on pronunciation, grammar points that are difficult for Chinese people who speak English, and English related to situations such as job interviews, talking on the phone, and other situations that you may find challenging. In addition, we will use technology to make learning fun. This will include activities such as watching YouTube videos and TV shows with subtitles and discussing them, and perhaps even having students make their own short videos (which we can put up on this web site and/or YouTube, if all the students agree).

Each class will stand on its own, so that you won’t fall behind if you miss a class due to your busy schedule. Also, student input as to what subjects you want to cover is encouraged. After all, I want to teach what you want to learn, not what I want to teach!

Where:

The English class will take place as part of the Tallahassee Chinese School, located on the campus of Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, Florida (United States).

The class is located in the Bellamy Building (which is located right next to the Strozier Library and Landis Green), and will be in Room BEL023 (Note: NOT 203, like last year!).

When:

Classes meet on Sundays during the Fall and Spring semester, from 1:35PM – 3:15PM. This will give parents a chance to accompany their children to Chinese class and make it to our class without disruption. We will be getting out at 3:15, not 3:30, so I can pack up and make it to my Alumni Village class to set up for a 4:00 start.

Here is a list of all dates for the Fall 2011 semester, which is the same as the Tallahassee Chinese School. There is a chance that I may have to cancel a class due to sickness or scheduling conflicts, but these instances should be rare:

9/11/2011
9/18/2011
9/25/2011
10/2/2011
10/9/2011
10/16/2011
10/23/2011
10/30/2011
11/6/2011
11/13/2011
11/20/2011
11/27/2011 (no class, Thanksgiveing break)
12/4/2011

How much:

The semester class will be $25. This works out to less that $2 per class. This will be paid to the officials at the Tallahassee Chinese School at registration, not to me. I am volunteering to teach this class for free. The cost of the class is to reimburse the TCS for what FSU is charging them for use of the Bellamy building. If there are excess funds available, I will work with the TCS officials to procure some materials for our class.

How:

If you are interested in joining our English class at the Tallahassee Chinese School and haven’t signed up, please fill out the form here:

 http://thoughtbyscott.com/esol/2011/09/join-tcs-english-class/

All that is required is your name and email address, though I would appreciate knowing your Chinese name and the province you are from.

At the first meeting of Chinese School, you will need to register with the Chinese School officials and then come to room BEL023 (again, please note that it is NOT room 203, like last year!).

You are welcome to join anytime during the semester.

I look forward to seeing you there!
